ABOUT THE ROLE
Vertex Control Systems is hiring a Controls Technician for a traveling installation and commissioning role. You'll lead and support the physical installation of HVAC control systems and building automation hardware on commercial, medical, and industrial projects throughout Louisiana and nationwide. The work mixes light electrical, mechanical, and software: you'll run conduit, pull and terminate low-voltage wiring, mount panels and field devices, program DDC controllers, and bring systems online with the engineering team. This is a hands-on role for someone who likes to be on-site and likes finishing what they start.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Install BAS panels, DDC controllers, sensors, valves, actuators, VFDs, and field devices on AHUs, RTUs, VAVs, chillers, and boilers
- Run EMT and flex conduit, pull and terminate low-voltage control wiring, label and document terminations
- Perform light line-voltage work — power up panels, install disconnects, and coordinate with electrical contractors
- Load, program, and configure Tridium Niagara N4, BACnet, and Modbus controllers per submitted sequences
- Point-to-point check, calibrate, and commission control points; assist with functional performance testing
- Read and red-line submittals, riser diagrams, and panel schedules; deliver clean as-built documentation
- Travel to job sites nationwide as projects require, typically Monday through Friday with weekends home
- Coordinate daily with project managers, mechanical contractors, and on-site facility staff
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 3+ years of hands-on HVAC controls, BAS, low-voltage, or industrial controls installation experience
- Comfortable reading mechanical drawings, control sequences of operation, and electrical schematics
- Experience running conduit (EMT, flex) and pulling control wiring to professional standards
- Working knowledge of 24V control circuits, relay logic, and basic line-voltage safety (lockout/tagout)
- Willing and able to travel weekly across the U.S. (valid driver's license, clean MVR, ability to fly)
- Able to lift 50 lbs, work on ladders, and access mechanical rooms, roofs, and ceiling spaces
- Strong written communication for daily reports, punch lists, and as-built documentation
NICE TO HAVE
- +Tridium Niagara N4 Technical Certification (TCP)
- +Experience with BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU/TCP
- +Familiarity with Distech, Honeywell, JCI, ALC, or Schneider product lines
- +EPA 608 Universal certification
- +Journeyman electrician card or low-voltage license
- +Prior experience commissioning chiller plants, hot water plants, or air handling units
WHAT WE OFFER
- Competitive base salary with performance bonuses
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- Company vehicle or vehicle allowance for field roles
- Tools, laptop, and certifications paid by the company
- Continuing education: Niagara N4, BACnet, and OEM training
- Per diem and lodging fully covered on traveling jobs
- Contract / 1099 arrangement available for the right candidate
